Beverly Hill plastic surgeon says striking actors using downtime to get new faces

FOX News

Dr. Ben Talei, who was recently publicly thanked by Sia for her facelift, told Fox News Digital he did'a ton' of facelifts during the height of the actors' strike. During the strike, actors have found themselves with a lot of downtime. In addition to picketing, another popular option, according to Dr. Ben Talei, is getting a cosmetic refresh. The Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon, who was recently praised by "Chandelier" singer Sia for giving her an "amazing" facelift, explained the mini plastic-surgery boom he has seen in his office. "Before the strike, as rumors were kind of going around that a strike was going to startโ€ฆ I began getting consults and I started getting lots of text messages from friends and friends of friends in Hollywood," Talei told Fox News Digital.

Beyond Deep Fakes

Communications of the ACM

Within the next five years, the way we work, live, play, and learn will be changed by digital humans (chatbots and avatars with very realistic human faces). Digital humans are already gaining popularity as social media influencers, and they will soon evolve into digital sales assistants, fashion advisers, and personal shoppers able to model how customers will look and move in the latest ensembles. Digital humans will become central to the multibillion-dollar fashion industry, as social media is further integrated into the retail customer experience. Digital humans will also help in healthcare, enabling medical students and social workers to develop better interview skills for patients in sensitive clinical settings. They will allow people, especially those with mental health challenges, to rehearse for job interviews. They will help keep elderly people connected to their communities and respectfully monitored so they can remain in their homes longer. They will provide a human face for personalized advice, support, and training--and do it at scale. This has become possible with the advent of cost-effective, highly realistic, personalized interactive digital agents and avatars sporting high-fidelity facial simulations powered by advances in both real-time neural rendering (NR) and low-latency computing. NR refers to the use of machine-learning (ML) techniques to generate digital faces or face replacements in video.17 NR rose to prominence with the advent of so-called "deep fakes"--the replacement of someone's face in videos with an NR-generated face of remarkable realism. The term originates from the name of a Reddit user (/u/deepfakes), a ML engineer who posted the original deep fake auto-encoder. Often used for satire, deep fakes can be harmful, presenting novel ethical issues. The best-known examples involve deep fakes of celebrities, a form of face "hijacking" whereby publicly available videos of a person are used to train an ML program that overlays the source person's face onto existing video footage; this technique was originally used in pornographic material.

The Place That Gives Tourists a New Face

This piece originally appeared in The Unpublishable, a newsletter critiquing the beauty industry. Even before you grab your bags from the carousels at Seoul's Incheon International Airport, you can fit your face into a spectral imaging machine to get your skin qualitatively analyzed for its health relative to your age. The A.I.-powered analysis is a free service courtesy of the Korea Tourism Organization's Medical Tourism Support Center. Staffers there to greet incoming travelers can usually speak at least some English, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Kiosks and clerks can help you find a facility for acupuncture or joint therapy.

The pandemic actually gave us a whole new perspective on online learning. With the online meets replacing actual classes, both the students and the teachers now understand the working of the online classes very well. Chatbots -- The New Face of Healthcare?

#artificialintelligence

It may seem like something out of a sci-fi novel, bots playing a role in helping you. But, is that truly the case? Its actually become a growing reality with various industries utilizing these artificial intelligence-powered chatbots to automate tedious processes and seamlessly provide consumers with round-the-clock attention. Chatbots were limited to marketing, banking, and customer service earlier, but they established themselves in healthcare during the pandemic. The genuine interest in adopting chatbots in the healthcare sector is clear since more than $800 million has been spent by startups on developing healthcare chatbots.

Top 8 AI-Powered Privacy Tools To Fool Facial Recognition Systems

#artificialintelligence

Facial recognition is one of the most controversial forms of AI. People, communities, and many activist groups have raised concerns against this technology because it jeopardises privacy and compromises an individual's security. While governments of different countries have placed mild to strict restrictions on such tech, there still seems to be a lot of scepticism and fear around. This has given rise to the development of several AI-powered privacy tools that help'fool' facial recognition technology. We have listed some of the most prominent ones. Developed at the University of Chicago's Sand lab, Fawkes very subtly alters photographs at a pixel level to trick facial recognition systems.

This AI Deepfakes Reality In The Name Of Privacy

#artificialintelligence

In an era of deepfakes for fun and deepfakes for deception, we now have deepfakes for privacy. And just like all the other deepfakes, this one raises challenging moral and ethical questions. The deepfake technology I'm taking about is from a Berlin-based startup called Brighter AI, which provides privacy solutions for an increasingly surveilled world: license plate blurring and face blurring so companies with cameras can comply with European privacy laws, especially GDPR. Now, the company is launching a new product, ProtectPhoto, which anonymizes faces in pictures in an entirely different way. "We extract the original faces and replace them with new faces that are non-trackable to the original one," Brighter AI CEO Marian Glaeser told me in a recent episode of the TechFirst podcast.
